Cold Email that got me the job.

This is my tale of how I sent a cold email and landed me a role where I have been for the past couple of years.

In 2019 I was laid off by one of the tech unicorns and I was in dire need of a new role. I did apply to multiple roles but many of them I just did not make their cut.

After multiple rejection emails, I had to re-think my approach to my job search as bills were slowly piling up and my termination benefits were running out fast.

I edited my resume a couple of times, as well as my cover letter but nothing concrete still came from the changes. A friend of mine who too had been laid off hatched a plan to google the top 100 Software companies in his locality and cold email all of them.

I borrowed the idea but added a twist to it. I didn't google the companies but rather searched for companies that had posted software roles in the past 30 days and cold-email those.

My idea was simple, tech recruitment is complex you could have a candidate pass through the hiring process and still turn down the offer. With that knowledge in hand, I knew targeting entities that were in the hiring process would have them consider me.

I cold emailed 3 companies and the 4th company had closed off the hiring and I was a week past its deadline. I looked at the posted role and poured my heart out addressing the recruiter. PS — Be authentic

I am fascinated by the Continous Integration and Continous Deployment and the enthusiastic developer community that is always willing to help. My fascination is a result of the technology making sure that minimal human interactions are required for new changes to the product/codebase.

As a candidate with experience in the Software Development lifecycle, I am highly skilled in the product lifecycle having prior experience as a full-stack developer. That role has seen me integrate and work with general DevOps technologies.

At Former-company, 2 of the projects I worked on were in the DevOps role for the distributed multicultural team I was part of. I believe that I will make a valuable asset to your team and I offer my resume attached herein for your review.

As per my professional summary, my qualities and experience make me highly suitable for the role of DevOps Engineer, and the opportunity to join Potential-company greatly interests me because it will further my skills as I add value to the organization.

Throughout my career, I have demonstrated the highest levels of service and commitment to the mission of any organization I have worked for.

Thus, if you are looking for an organized team player then I am the perfect fit.

I am eager to learn more about how your organization can benefit from my contribution.

I thank you for your time and consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.

That’s it. Yes pretty basic but did the trick. I was finally emailed back in a day and an interview was scheduled the following week. In a fortnight I had my contract in hand and was required to start right away.

I find it hard to strike conversations in public but what’s the worst that could happen with a cold email? No response? Allow me to remind you that you lose every single opportunity you didn’t try. Try and fail but don't fail to try who knows your next role could be waiting.
